Behind Our Name and Logo
Why Ocean Relations Collaborative ?
Words matter. We carefully chose our name to represent who we are and the values we share.
Relations: Relationships are our most treasured research product. Those we hold among ourselves and our collaborators, and those lived between humans and the more-than-human world. Sustaining resilient and respectful relationships is why we research.
Collaborative: We chose this adjective and use it as a noun to encompass our research family and illustrate the actions we take together to move towards our shared vision and objectives.
The rich and diverse ecosystem of Pacific Northwest kelp forests informed and inspired the colour palette and visual for the Ocean Relations Collaborative logo. The logo consists of two images, a piece of giant kelp and a human figure. The kelp is depicted in the naturally occurring yet awe-inspiring spiral that is a mathematically, scientifically, and artistically beautiful shape. The human figure has their arms reaching around the kelp reminding us of our collective responsibility to care for and protect the ocean and acknowledging the human impact on the environment. The logo represents the interdependent relationship between people of the northwest and the Pacific Ocean. Logo created by Arianna Augustine.
