Join Us

Interested in joining our research family? Would you be a good fit? Contact us!

We are grateful to receive dozens of emails a month about joining our collaborative. Before you reach out, please take the time to learn about SFU and REM’s graduate program and our collaborative’s values, approach, and research themes. Armed with this knowledge, please do reach out with an email to OceanRelationsCollaborative@gmail.com  that concisely specifies your scholarly ambitions and how you see yourself contributing to the lab. Please attach a CV and other examples of your scholarly work (i.e.; honours thesis, peer-reviewed papers) and efforts to mobilize this work (i.e.; artwork, public, reports, links to videos and media interviews). Please know that we manage many enquiries each week. The more you can specify your alignment with the collaborative, the quicker we will be in touch.

Timing: While applications to REM are reviewed in February of each year, please get in touch with us in the summer or early fall so you can be well equipped to apply for scholarships to support your application. Those candidates who have applied for external fellowships (i.e.; NSERC and SSHRC) the fall prior to their projected entry, will be given special consideration.

Our Mentoring Philosophy: We aim to create an inclusive, supportive, and engaging mentoring environment that provides students and postdocs with the professional skills, opportunities, and nurturing atmosphere they need to grow as independent yet collaborative scientists.

Our goal is to train the next generation of Ocean Science Change Makers who: 1) Challenge entrenched ideas with humility, 2) Co-produce new knowledge with diverse knowledge holders, 3) Recognize their power, privilege, and positionality, 4) Strive for equity in all aspects of their work, 5) Self-assess their research process and outcomes to better serve underserved sectors of society, and 6) Mobilize their science outside the academy by translating their knowledge in accessible ways to diverse audiences.
