Hello! I am a PhD student with a curiousity for anything concerning human-ocean relationships. This is perhaps surprising as I was raised on the prairies in Treaty 7 territory, where my family first settled 4 generations ago (from Ukraine, Germany, Poland, Ireland, & Britain). As settler and a scholar, I see my research as one avenue where I can uphold my personal responsibilities to reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples and the land/sea. I am driven to do co-produced, community-based research that upholds diverse knowledge forms and Indigenous governance. For my PhD I am contributing to Coastal Voices and NSERC ResNet. I employ field ecology, social science, and social-ecological modelling to investigate how Indigenous led management of the relationships among sea otters, shellfish and people could alter social and ecological outcomes, such as food sovereignty. I am grateful to my partners in research, the Ka:’yu:’k’t’h’ Che:k’tles7et’h’ Nations, with whom I do place-based research, as well as the nuučaanuɫ, Haíɫzaqv and Xaayda Nations who make up Coastal Voices, all of whom I am accountable to. Finally, I’m grateful to currently live in Squamish on the traditional, unceded territory of the Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw close to the mountains and the ocean, where you can find me hiking, skiing and mountain biking.
