Relational place-based solutions for environmental policy misalignments - By nicole marie burton - Petroglyph Studios - 2024

For this short perspective paper in Trends in Ecology and Evolution, our author team felt it was necessary that we work with an artist to convey the main message. The visual depiction of siloed environmental governance versus relational approaches is so much more evocative than text describing the same phenomenon (especially when you have a short word count!). Our collaborative author group worked with nicole marie burton at Petroglyph studios, who took our idea and brought it to life. In the artpiece you see three different places showcased; caribou in the boreal forest, sea otters on the west coast, and salmon along their migration routes to spawning habitat. These represent three different places that our authorship team has experience working/living, and where we have seen the success of Indigenous-led place-based approaches that contrast dominant siloed approaches.
